(MAY 2010) THE SWEDISH SEAFOOD TRANSPORT COMPANY Fiskhamnens Åkeri AB has purchased Transvision Fleet Planner to optimise the daily distribution of fresh fish and shellfish from wholesalers to customers in Central Sweden.
Fiskhamnens Åkeri is a family-owned company with 35 employees and more than 50 years of experience in transporting seafood. The company serves around 160 customers and handles over 150,000 shipments each year, operating six days a week. During an average working day, between 40 and 90 tonnes of fish and shellfish are distributed all across Central Sweden.
Gothenburg and Stockholm are the two main distribution areas, and a large part of the seafood is transported from the Gothenburg headquarters to the capital. This is a two-legged process: Long-haul trucks transport the goods to a cross-docking terminal near Stockholm, where the goods are repacked and carried the rest of the way by smaller distribution vans.
Until now, planning has been carried out manually by the drivers themselves, who have had to meet in very early in the morning in order to plan the distribution routes. With the implementation of Transvision Fleet Planner, however, the planning process is optimised significantly, resulting in the fact that the routes are ready for the drivers to execute when they arrive at work.
One of Fiskhamnens Åkeri’s main incentives to implement Transvision Fleet Planner was to gain an overview of the transport and distribution. Therefore, a part of the project is to implement a handheld mobile solution and to integrate it with Transvision Fleet Planner.
So far, orders have been processed by means of printed notes, but now route lists will be sent electronically from Transvision Fleet Planner to the drivers’ mobile units. The mobile units, in turn, are then to be used to send back status messages in connection with departures and arrivals and to transmit GPS positions. In this way, planners will be able to monitor the progress of the execution closely.
Transvision is looking forward to cooperating closely with Fiskhamnens Åkeri in order to assist the company in optimising its distribution.
